Efficacy of extracorporeal shockwave therapy in the treatment of postherpetic neuralgia: Case series

Introduction
Established conventional treatments for postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) and postherpetic itch (PHI) are difficult and often disappointing. In this report, we describe the successful applications of extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) on pain and itch associated with PHN and PHI.
Case summary
In three cases, ESWT was administered using a shockwave device (DUOLITH® SD1 BT (F-SW), Storz Medical) to skin areas affected by pain or itch. An energy flux density of 0.120 impulses was administered at 7-day intervals for six sessions. The NRS, 5D-Itch Scale, and Patients’ Global Impression of Change (PGIC) scale were used to evaluate the efficacy of ESWT.
Result
All three patients showed reduced pain and itching up to one month after treatment. All of PGIC score were improved and 5-D itch Scale significantly were decreased. There were no side effect such pneumothorax happened.
Conclusion
We found that ESWT was clinically useful as a non-invasive therapy for pain and itch associated with PHN, and can be considered an effective alternative modality for the treatment of PHN and PHI.
